General Information About Interlaken

"By the beginning of the 19th century Interlaken in the Bernese Oberland had already become renowned for its impressive mountain scenery. Famous contemporaries such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Felix Mendelssohn traveled in these mountains. Interlaken's success as a tourist destination was further enhanced by the completion of the Bernese Oberland Railway in 1890 and the Jungfrau Railway in 1912.

As a vacation destination and convention location of international importance, Interlaken is an ideal starting point for countless excursions. Over 45 mountain railways, cable cars, chair lifts and ski lifts lead to 200 kilometers of pistes and a dense network of hiking trails. Excursion ships, including historic paddle steamers, ply the waters of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz."

    •  Schynige Platte near Wilderswil – nostalgic rack-railway, fascinating view of Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau, Alpine garden with about 500 plant species and a lot of hiking possibilities.
    •   Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn – the rides by rack-railway to the highest railway station in Europe and the cableway to the Piz Glora revolving restaurant: two top mountain experiences in the Bernese Oberland.
    •   Harder Kulm – a cableway take

Lauterbrunnen Valley

"At the head of the Lauterbrunnen Valley, take the UNESCO Trail past impressive waterfalls and enjoy the isolation - nature still has all the space in the world up here.

Two paths lead to the Upper Lauterbrunnen Valley - the high level trail from MUrren and the old trading route from Stechelberg.

As a UNESCO trail, the latter highlights the fascination of this secluded high valley, naming glaciers, streams and mountain lakes, pointing out arnica, saxifrage and Turk's cap, and showing where ibex, black grouse and eagles can be seen. And all the while to the sounds of thundering torrents and babbling brooks. Boasting 72 waterfalls, the spray is enough to rouse even the most tired of hikers!
Romantically wild, the Upper Lauterbrunnen Valley is far from civilisation. The Hotel Obersteinberg is lit by candles, and everything is cooked on wood fires. Mules carry the food up to 1,800m and an alpine dairy provides specialities just as it would have done 200 years ago."

Brienzer Rothorn – steam mountain

"It takes around an hour for the small steam locomotive to push the red scenic carriage uphill from Lake Brienz all the way to the Brienzer Rothorn – and much of the machinery stems from the time it was founded. From the Unesco Biosphere Entlebuch (Sorenberg) region a cable car makes its way up to the Rothorn – in contrast to the steam locomotive, both during summer and winter.
Equally as diverese are also the views: From Bernese Alps to Lake Brienz and Grimsel region, as well as the Pilatus or Hogant. Summit restaurants and mountain guesthouse add to a warm welcome here, as well as guaranteeing a memorable stay! And hikes down to the Planalp, direction BrUnig or even as far as the Kemmeriboden-bad add to geat adventure."

Harder

"The 735-meter climb from Interlaken Ost, up through the woods, past the game park to Harder Kulm is done the easy way, by cable car. And the picturesque restaurant with red slate roof and small tower is discovered right next to the footbridge that divides the two lakes of the airy viewing platform.

Harder is also a starting point for mountain hikes, direction Augstmatthorn for example, or on one of the forest trails back to Interlaken – while the more sportive climb the Harder and take the railway back!

Altitude: 1322m
View: Over Interlaken to three-star Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau; Brienz and Thun lakes
Attractions: Pending triangular viewing platform "
