The Rigi – renowned as the “Queen of the Mountains” – has long been acclaimed as one of the most popular of all Alpine excursion destinations in Switzerland. The summit offers a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view extending over 13 lakes as far as the Black Forest in neighbouring Germany. The Rigi can be reached 365 days a year by either of two cogwheel railways operating from Vitznau (inaugurated in 1871 as the first mountain railway in Europe) and Goldau; as well the aerial cableway from Weggis. Active visitors can choose from a 120-kilometre network of hiking trails. The less energetic can rest and relax on one of the inviting terraces overlooking the sea of magical mist.
The ideal excursion from Lucerne starts with a cruise on a paddle-steamer to Weggis or Vitznau and descends to Arth-Goldau from where a train connects back to Lucerne. (This itinerary can also be done in reverse).
