Saas Fee
“Take the world’s highest lying subway to the world’s largest ice pavilion, next to the world’s highest lying revolving restaurant. This is how one might describe a visit to the Ice Grotto of Mittelallalin. But one really should go and see the Ice Pavilion for oneself. A 70 meter long tunnel leads into the thousands of years old ice of the Fairy Glacier, to what is most probably the world’s largest ice pavilion. The over 5,500 cubic meter large grotto, located at the Mittelallalin stop of Metro Alpin, the subterranean Alpine train at an altitude of 3,456 meters above sea level, offers an in-depth view of the interior of the glacier.
Even reaching the ice grotto by means of the subterranean cable car Metro Alpin, which visitors board at the “”Felskinn”” station above Saas-Fee, is an adventure. Above, the world’s highest lying revolving restaurant beckons. The restaurant enables visitors to obtain a complete 360 degree panoramic view of the mountain and glacier world of the Saas Valley. Mittelallalin is the starting point for tours in the High Alps, mountain and glacier hikes and glacier skiing.”
