Sunnegga – Rothorn

The funicular ride from the valley station in Zermatt to Sunnegga takes just 3 minutes. The railway, fully renovated in 2013, leads up a rock tunnel through the inside of the mountain to this sunny, scenic terrace with incomparable views of the Matterhorn. This beautiful mountain excursion is particularly popular first thing in the morning as you can enjoy magnificent views of the Valais Alps at sunrise.
In summer, the marmot-watching station is just a few minutes’ walk from Sunnegga, and promises an unforgettable experience for the whole family. A theme trail reveals fascinating facts about these charming mammals, which live in burrows high in the Alps.
The crystal-clear waters of the Leisee invite for a swim in summer. Children love playing on the big raft and splashing around in the water – while adults relax and enjoy the glorious view of the Matterhorn.
From Sunnegga a cable car takes you to the peak of the Rothorn (3’103m).
The cable car carries visitors to the summit of the Rothorn – or to be precise, the Unterrothorn. The view from there showcases the highest peaks of the Valais Alps. In summer, this is the starting point for challenging hikes and a popular destination for sunrise excursions. In winter, the summit station offers direct access to the ski pistes.
